I don't feel like a hero or anything special

I don't know why, but we have been called awesome, hero's, inspirations and more.  All we did was raise just under a thousand dollars for St. Baldrick's Foundation.  I got to bug our family and friends to spread the word and give what they could.  You guys are the hero's, awesome and those that inspire.  Without you John and I could not have had the chance to have our heads shaved to show a little bit to the world what cancer patients have to endure.  The loss of hair during treatment to try and save their lives.

We had a great time!  John was called out of town but he got a chance to have his head shaved before he left.  So he could not be at the St. Baldrick's event sponsored by many, but two of the hosting businesses were Studio Branca and Pujols 5 Grill.  Marc at Studio Branca has a great staff and they put on a great event.  Pujols 5 Grill  (yes Albert Pujols of Cardinal Baseball) has some great food and the wait staff and management kept the food and drink moving.

I know from the Pujols 5 event page at the St. Baldrick's website that as of yesterday morning (May 16, 2010, the day of the event),  there were 87 people registerd that had raised money either as an individual or as teams, like John and I.  So there was a crowd with all those folks and their supporters.  That number does not reflect the people that showed up at the door to register to be a shavee with their donations.

In support of John and I our kids, my parents, one of my sons best friends with his mom, a very good friend of mine and a very good friend of mine from UMSL came out in support to watch me get my head shaved.  I have to admit it was exciting and pretty scary for me.  You see I have  an extremely serious skin condition on my scalp that I nor the doctors have not found anything that will treat it.  It's genetic, like my skin cancer and John's medical issues too, and not being a very attractive person to look at it took a lot of personal commitment to get all my hair shaved off.

The one and only time I thought about not shaving my head in support and awareness I thought about all those kids that may loose the battle against cancer and for all those kids that have won their battles, like my cousin Megan, and that one time only I said screw it, the world can just look at my condition, which of course won't kill me, and maybe they will think that there are worse things in life and we can all make a difference.

So we raised some money to help, John feels like he just got to Marine boot camp again, and people will see my ugly head.  Who gives a crap so longs as we were able to help to save a life someday.

Everyone should do something for others that will put you on the line of your very own comfort zone and forget about what it does to your image, let loose some of your pride to make a difference and hopefully change a life for the better. Yours and someone else.

We are not the hero's. All those kids and adults fighting diseases like cancer or depression or any disease or disorder that makes you want to just lay down and die, but they don't.  And you who do the best they can to give of themselves their money and time are the hero's.  John and I were simply your vessels.  And we had a great time too.

Thanks everyone!
